Advent; the time of waiting, anticipating, preparing for, seeing the coming of God,
arriving in the form of a baby. Jesus Christ; a holy disruption.
Holy Disruption
“We are called to be contemplatives, that is see-ers, men and women who are called
to see the coming of God.” ~ Henri Nouwen, A Book of Hours
Holy Disruption is a self-paced, 25-day Advent journey, offered virtually.
Christmas baubles, parties and cheer surround, delight and distract us this time of year
- and how wonderful that can be! But the time of Advent is a time full of conflict, sorrow,
despair and hate - biblically, historically and currently. And many of us feel the friction;
we sense the discomfort of conflict without knowing why.
This retreat offers the opportunity to disrupt our daily lives, to interrupt our “business as usual”
selves, and in that disruption to open ourselves to preparing for the coming of Christ anew.
Hope. Peace. Joy. Love. We Wait. We Prepare.
Seeking to become see-ers, we can find ourselves on a journey, traveling into the rich time
and space of Advent. Music, scripture, imagery, imagination, poetry, ponderings and prayer
offer us ways of seeking; of seeing; enriching and deepening our Advent journey, understanding
and experience.
What is Holy Disruption?
Advent is a time of holy disruption! God breaks in - breaks into our world, into our lives
- and not only interrupts them, but turns them upside down in a myriad of unexpected ways,
wondrous, glorious and, sometimes dangerous ways. Powerful, transformative; inviting us -
insistently - to embrace a new way of living, a new way of being, a new way of being as
God’s children, living in God’s Creation.
Advent is Full of Holy Disruptions!
Mary, John the Baptist, angels, three kings disruptions all, to name just a few. And then
there’s Jesus… THE holy disruption.
“The Lord's coming is an ongoing event around us, between us, and within us. To become
a contemplative, therefore, means to throw off — or better, to peel off — the blindfolds
that prevent us from seeing his coming in the midst of our world.”
~ Henri Nouwen, A Book of Hours
How might you seek, see, welcome, embrace holy disruption in your life this Advent season?
How might you continue to welcome holy disruption in your life in all the days to come?
Living Spirit, Breath of Life that enlivens all life, may Your holy disruptions remind
and invite us to open our hearts and minds, to seek and see Your Light in the darkness and
to prepare ourselves to welcome anew Your Love into our lives and live as that Love in
the world.
Amen
